Mandatory concussion training for combat sports individuals

Mandatory concussion training for combat sports participants

The Combat Sports Authority of NSW (the Authority) has introduced mandatory concussion training as part of the recent phase 4 changes to the Combat Sports Amendment Act 2024.

This training is the first of its kind to be introduced by an Australian regulatory body and is aimed at improving safety and awareness around concussion and other serious head injuries in combat sports. The training was formulated in collaboration with Connectivity Traumatic Brain Injury Australia.

The online training only takes around 20 minutes to complete and is designed to assist 
participants with recognising, managing and responding to concussion risks.

The mandatory concussion training must be completed by all accredited attending medical practitioners, registered industry participants, promoters and combatants and any person applying for accreditation or registration with the Authority.

All registered industry participants, promoters and combatants and any person applying for registration with the Authority are required to complete Modules 1 to 4 of the NSW Combat Sports Concussion Short Course.

All accredited attending medical practitioners, registered referees, current combat sport inspectors and anyone applying for accreditation or registration as an attending medical practitioner or referee are required to also complete Module 5 of the NSW Combat Sports Concussion Short Course.

Mandatory concussion training must be completed by 31 December 2025.

From 31 December 2025, registered industry participants, promoters and combatants who have not completed the mandatory concussion training will be automatically suspended.

The Authority recommends that all accredited attending medical practitioners, registered industry participants, promoters and combatants complete the mandatory concussion training as soon as possible to avoid potential suspension of registration.

When completing the account information to sign up to enrol for the mandatory concussion training, you must ensure that your email, first name and last name are entered exactly as is shown on your Combat Sports Authority registration record.

If these details are entered incorrectly, it may not be recorded on your training completion record.

Concussion and other serious head injuries are a serious health risk in combat sports. The Combat Sports Amendment Bill 2024, which included many safety reforms, made it mandatory for accredited attending medical practitioners, registered industry participants, promoters and combatants to complete concussion training.

This training will help you to understand how to identify and manage concussion risks to protect yourself and others if you are engaging or participating in combat sports.

The course takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

No, the training is free.

If you haven’t completed the required modules by 31 December 2025, your registration will be automatically suspended until you complete the required training.

Yes, it is a requirement for all applications for accreditation or registration under the Act, including renewal applications, to complete mandatory concussion training.

If you do not complete the required concussion training, your accreditation or registration application cannot be approved until you have completed the required concussion training modules.

No, if you are registered as a combatant and an industry participant or promoter, you are only required to complete the training once. The training completion record will be reflected on both registrations.

No, there is no need to purchase a completion certificate. The Authority will check your training completion record to confirm that you have completed the relevant course modules.
