The Queanbeyan Tigers Australian Rules Football Club are today celebrating after Member for Monaro John Barilaro officially opened the new and upgraded facilities at the Tigers’ home
ground.
Mr Barilaro said it marked an exciting milestone with the club’s facilities enhanced to cater for the growing Queanbeyan Tigers women’s teams, which are now part of the fabric of
Queanbeyan.
“It is a pleasure to be here today to officially open these brand new facilities, which will provide a huge boost to women’s sport in the region,” Mr Barilaro said.
“The Queanbeyan Tigers have been part of this city since 1925 and over the years they have not only grown but they have become a training ground and home to a number of local sporting stars.
“We are lucky enough to have a huge amount of home grown talent in Queanbeyan, however, the facilities here were struggling to cope with the enormous growth in women’s participation in AFL.
“That’s why I committed $590,000 during the 2019 Station Election to build new change rooms, toilets, add solar panels to the grandstand roof and improve the so-called ‘Growlers Deck’ viewing area.
“These additions save the club money on electricity costs, improve facilities for spectators as well as provide dedicated space for the Tigerettes and visiting teams.”
Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Mayor Tim Overall congratulated the club on the latest improvements at Margaret Donoghoe Oval.
“Since the Tigers relocated from Queanbeyan Park in 1980, they’ve continually worked hard to improve and expand the facilities at their home ground,” Cr Overall said.
“What started as little more than an unfenced oval with an open-air grandstand, has now become an impressive facility for players and spectators and the envy of sporting clubs from all around the region.”
Queanbeyan Tigers Football Club General Manager Adrian Pavese said the upgrades were an exciting addition to the club’s infrastructure.
“The club has worked hard over the years to see these improvements made and it is great to now cater for our female players,” Mr Pavese said.
“These additions will also save the club thousands of dollars on electricity costs, improve facilities for spectators and provide dedicated space for the Tigerettes and visiting teams.”
