The first sod of dirt has now been turned to make way for the $1.2 million cricket precinct upgrades at Memorial Oval in Ingleburn.
The joint funding for this project is thanks to a $100,000 grant from the NSW Government’s ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund as well as Campbelltown City Council. The upgrades are set to include brand new facilities, cricket infrastructure improvements and irrigation works.
Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, was honoured to participate in the first sod turn on behalf of the Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee.
“Community sport plays a critical role throughout the region and it is great to see that local residents in the Ingleburn area will now have access to the premier sporting facilities that they deserve,” Mr Coure said.
Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee, said the project was a great example of how the NSW ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund was benefiting grassroots cricket across the State.
“We have provided $6 million to clubs and councils to support more than 200 projects across NSW and we are proud to see the positive impact on cricket,” Minister Lee said.
“This project will benefit all levels of cricket in south west Sydney, from girls and boys picking up a bat and ball for the first time to the region’s elite players.”
Cricket NSW Chief Executive Officer, Lee Germon, said these facility upgrades will help to foster the love of cricket in the broader community and increase participation opportunities for women and girls.
“I would like to acknowledge and thank the NSW Government via the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Legacy Fund and Campbelltown City Council for their investment into these important facility upgrades.
Thank you for your support in creating a welcoming environment to unite and inspire the community to play and love our game,” Mr Germon said.
“Every man, woman and child deserves to have equal access to the best sporting facilities in the State and the NSW ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund is ensuring just that,”
