Office of Sport

Sport clubs have a responsibility to provide safe environments for children and young people.

In NSW, the Working With Children Check (WWCC) is a prerequisite for anyone in child-related work – paid and voluntary. It involves a national criminal history check and review of findings of workplace misconduct. The Office of the Children’s Guardian manages the WWCC in NSW.

Verifying the WWCC is only one thing that clubs should do to safeguard children. Read our safeguarding children section to understand the broad strategies.

What club committees can do

There are 8 key steps club committees should follow to create safe and fair clubs.

Specifically, when it comes to working with children checks:

  • Be familiar with the existing policies your sport likely has in this area. These are generally set by your national or state peak body.
  • Visit the Office of the Children’s Guardian website to:
    • understand the law
    • get information, factsheets and training
    • register the club so that it can verify WWCC
    • assist your members that need to get a WWCC.
