Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered Program

What is Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered?

Developed by the University of Newcastle, Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered is an award-winning, evidence-based program proven to enhance the physical and social-emotional well-being of girls.

The program is for dads and their primary school-aged daughter(s) (K-6) and focuses on empowering young girls and improving girls’ fundamental movement skills through fun activities and one-on-one time with their dad.

If you are a dad who wants to spend quality time with your daughter, do fun physical activities, and learn how to improve her sport skills, confidence, self-esteem and resilience, book into a program.

Who is it for?

The Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered program can accommodate any primary school aged girl and a significant male figure in their lives. This might be a father, grandfather, uncle, older brother or trusted family friend. The program is designed to use male role models as agents of change, improving the physical activity levels, sport skills and social-emotional wellbeing of young girls.

There are two different Daughters and Dads program offerings including our ‘Classic’, weekly program and our ‘Weekender’, condensed residential program at a Sport and Recreation Centre.

Our Daughters and Dads Classic program includes:

  • One initial ‘dads/father figure only’ 2 hour information session,  followed by eight weekly 90 minute sessions for daughters and their dads/father figures.
  • Each week involves a short theory session focusing on ways to build confidence, self-esteem and resilience in girls followed by a practical session focusing on fun rough and tumble play, fitness and sport skill activities
  • The emphasis is on fun and the program caters for all physical activity and skill levels
  • Daughters and dads receive a program t-shirt and drink bottle

Our Daughters and Dads Weekender program includes:

  • A two-night weekend stay at a Sport and Recreation Centre.  Each dad and their daughter will have their own room at our scenic centre and your stay includes all outdoor recreation activities and meals.
  • Participants complete elements of the Classic Daughters and Dads program over the weekend combined with some traditional camp adventure activities
  • Our fun practical sessions focus on rough and tumble play, sport skills, and fitness
  • Our theory sessions focus on building confidence, self-esteem, and resilience in girls
  • The emphasis is on fun and the program caters for all physical activity and skill levels
  • Daughters and Dads both receive a program t-shirt and drink bottle

"The Daughters and Dads weekend I went on was in a beautiful place called Milson Island and was great opportunity for my daughter and I to spend quality time  together with other fathers and daughters.

It’s a fantastic initiative from the Office of Sport and the NSW Government and I encourage Daughters and Dads to sign up and get involved"
