Our purpose

The Aboriginal Outcomes team works in partnership with Aboriginal communities, the NSW sport sector and key government stakeholders. We align our efforts to deliver culturally informed, strengths‑based approaches. This work respects culture and helps build wellbeing, safety, connection and opportunity for Aboriginal people through sport and active recreation.

Play on Country

The Play on Country Strategy recognises that sport and active recreation in Aboriginal communities are deeply connected to culture and Country. It is where young people learn from Elders, where families grow stronger across generations, and where stories are shared and culture is kept strong.

It can be a footy game that brings the whole community together, a tournament that reconnects kin from across NSW, or children playing late under lights that also serve as a gathering place. In these moments, sport is not just an activity, it is community building in action.

Mainstream approaches often define sport through performance, winning and competition results. For Aboriginal people, sport carries a broader meaning. It is linked to ceremony, culture, kinship and care. Relationships sit at the centre, and they take time to build. Aboriginal leadership is critical, bringing cultural authority, trust and influence that cannot be replicated from outside the community.

When sport is measured and funded only through mainstream systems and metrics, we risk overlooking what matters most. To truly support Aboriginal communities, we need to rethink how we define, measure and invest in sport. Our approach should adapt to culture, not expect culture to fit within existing systems.

The Strategy is guided by four pillars.

These pillars reflect community priorities and are underpinned by culture, lived experience and strengths.

Listen to Mob

Community Voice and Relationships. We put community voices at the centre by building genuine relationships and creating ongoing opportunities to listen, learn and respond to what matters most to Aboriginal people.

Design with Mob

Policy and Partnerships. We work in partnership with Aboriginal communities and organisations to co‑design policies, programs and initiatives that are culturally informed, inclusive and effective.

Grow with Mob

Capability and Sustainability. We strengthen skills, confidence and systems across communities and organisations. This supports long‑term participation, builds leadership and creates sustainable outcomes.

Measure with Mob.

Evidence, Insight and Impact We use culturally appropriate approaches to understand impact, share stories and ensure accountability. This includes meaningful data collection, evaluation and measures of success defined by community.

Meet the team

Aboriginal Outcomes team

Our Aboriginal Outcomes team brings strong connections to Country, culture and community. Rachal, Gerald, Jason, Sharmay and Marty represent Gamilaraay, Gumbaynggirr, Thunghutti, Walbunja Yuin, Gomeroi and Tubba Gah Wiradjuri mob.

Sport is central to their stories. From Cathy Freeman’s Olympic win to Koori Knockout victories and family members rising through rep teams, these moments inspire pride and possibility.

For the team, sport builds confidence, strengthens identity and supports wellbeing. It creates culturally safe spaces to connect with community and opens pathways to leadership. Their lived experience shows how sport can shape lives and bring people together.

They are passionate about all sports, whether playing or supporting grassroots events, they share a belief that sport helps the next generation grow strong, proud and connected to culture.

Resource hub

NSW Aboriginal Sport and Active Recreation Network

The NSW Aboriginal Sport and Active Recreation Network connects the Office of Sport, state sporting organisations and the active recreation sector in a culturally safe, collaborative space. Meeting every two months, the Network shares stories, resources and opportunities, builds capability, and highlights what’s working across NSW. It also helps identify and address barriers to participation and supports inclusive, culturally appropriate practice. Find out more, or join.

Regional roadshow

Led by the Aboriginal Outcomes, the Play on Country Regional Roadshow is an upcoming place-based engagement approach designed to bring together the sport sector, government and Aboriginal communities to start meaningful conversations about how sport can contribute to stronger, healthier and more connected communities. Rather than focusing on program delivery, the Roadshow creates space to listen, connect and collaborate, ensuring that future actions and investments are shaped by community priorities and grounded in local context. Planned from late July through the remainder of 2026.
