1. I have been asked by a Duke of Ed User to be their Assessor. What is involved?
An Assessor is a suitably skilled, experience and/or qualified volunteer who can assist with and assess a young person’s activity being undertaken for their Section.
An Assessor completes a digital report (or the young person can print a hardcopy) at the conclusion of each Section. This Report verifies that the Duke of Ed User has met the requirements in that Section.
2. Do I need a Working with Children Check to be an Assessor?
Any person working with children (under 18) in NSW in a direct, ongoing capacity requires a valid WWCC – this includes Assessors. Refer to Office of the Children’s Guardian. Possible exceptions do apply.
3. Where can I find the Volunteer Commencement Guide?
In the Duke of Ed User resources section (bottom of the page).
4. Do I need to submit the volunteer details and agreements form from the Volunteer Commencement Guide to the Duke of Ed Centre?
Yes, either digitally or hard copy. You can either return it to the Duke of Ed User or forward directly to the Duke of Ed Leader.
5. Do I need to be approved by the young person’s Duke of Ed Leader before starting to assess the activity?
Yes, all Assessors must be approved by the Duke of Ed Leader before starting any Duke of Ed activities with them.
6. Can I be an Assessor for my son/daughter or brother/sister?
No. Assessors should not be a family member.
7. Does an Assessor need to be with the Duke of Ed User each time they engage in the activity?
No, the frequency of related contact and monitoring between the young person and the Assessor will depend on the activity and the age/level of independence of the Duke of Ed User.
8. How do I assess a Duke of Ed User’s activity?
The young person records their activities in their Online Record Book (ORB) and will then either print off a summary and present this to you for assessment or you will receive an email from the ORB requesting you assess the young person.
9. What do I do if a Duke of Ed User has not met the requirements for their Section?
The Assessor should discuss their concerns with the young person or their Duke of Ed Leader. The young person should then be encouraged to finish the requirements of that Section.
10. Can I as a director, sign off on a young person’s activity even if I am not directly overseeing them?
You can nominate yourself as the Assessor if supervising staff are appropriately qualified and the organisation meets NSW Child Protection requirements. However, final approval is at the discretion of the Duke of Ed Leader.
11. How can my organisation be listed as a Duke of Ed Activity Provider?
You can register for the National Activity Provider Directory.
